With warmer months approaching, there are many fantastic dress options available for one's baby shower which emulate some of the latest season's trends while maintaining a classic style. From bold colors to gorgeous patterns to flowing maxi dresses, there is the perfect dress for everyone. Once you find your favorite style, you will feel comfortable and look gorgeous at your baby shower!
Maxi dresses are incredibly popular this season, as they have been worn by recent expectant celebrities from Kourtney Kardashian to Amy Adams. While Kourtney wore her maxi dress to a red carpet event, Amy chose a more laid back approach and wore hers on a day around town. This versatility is one of the maxi dress's greatest qualities, as it can be worn for a casual baby shower or dressed up for a more formal one. Incredibly flattering, maxi dresses emphasize the smallest part of your body with an empire waist. This accentuation directly under the bust gently cascades to ankle or floor length, creating a tall and elongated look. Aside from their flattering style, maxi dresses also are incredibly comfortable. You will not have to worry about being squeezed or uncomfortable, as the flowing dress allows room for your baby bump without creating a baggy look! The Halter Spring Green Maternity Dress from Olian Maternity is a great option for a baby shower, as its fresh spring look is vibrant and fun, especially when paired with a gorgeous bracelet or pair of earrings. Its casual elegance is emphasized by braided halter straps and its soft fabric is flattering and comfortable. Whether you choose to dress it up or down, a maxi dress is the perfect combination of elegance and carefree style-perfect for an expectant mother!
Bright colors are always on trend for baby showers, as they are a celebratory sign of the excitement in the air. From bright pinks to deep greens, deep colors have always been a staple for expectant mothers. This season is no different, and one color that truly stands out is turquoise. Its rich hue is flattering on everyone and it resonates of spring and summer. Maternal America's new spring collection includes the beautiful turquoise Front Tie Smock Dress, perfect for baby showers. Smocking on the bust and a front tie is incredibly flattering, and the flow of the soft fabric provides an effortlessly chic look. Paired with flats or sandals, and either gold or silver jewelry, this dress is sure to make a statement at your shower. The Front Tie Dress, also from Maternal America, demonstrates the turquoise trend by creating a beautiful abstract pattern of different hues of blues. Tying underneath the bust, a flattering empire waist silhouette is created while wide shoulder straps create a balanced look. It is easily dressed up or down, and can be reworn many times after your baby shower!
Each spring season, floral prints make their way back onto the runway, and this season is no exception. From dainty floral designs to bold abstract flowers, this trend is refreshing, beautiful, and fun. When wearing a floral print, remember to choose one that is in proportion with your body size. For petite women, choose prints that are smaller, as a large print can overwhelm a small frame. For taller women, a larger print can be fun and festive. The Floral Maxi Dress from Japanese Weekend combines bright colors with a bold floral pattern. A scoop neck and empire waist are incredibly flattering. Paired with strappy sandals, a look fit for any baby shower is instantly created. The Cocktail Dress, also from Japanese Weekend, is an absolutely gorgeous dress. The black, red, and white pattern is a classic combination which is modernized by the beautiful floral print. Knee length, this dress looks great paired with heels or flats.
Finding the perfect dress for your baby shower is very important, and there are many great options available. As long as you are comfortable and find a style that works for you, you will look and feel great!

Maternal America's Ribbed Cotton Tank does this perfectly. With a scoop neck and fine ribbing, it is super cute. Lightweight cotton is cool and comfortable, ensuring that you will feel great even on the hottest summer days. A final summer essential is the lightweight, short sleeve, summer gop. A breezy top is fashionable and versatile, as it can work with a skirt, capris, or shorts. It also can be dressed up or down with the addition of jewelry. One super cute option is Maternal America's Crochet Top. A fun colorful pattern is combined with a gorgeous crochet neckline. It looks great with jeans or black or white capris, and is perfect for anything from a day at the park to a dinner out. I love it paired with some gold bangles and capri jeans! The Diamond Tank Top is another great option, as it is work appropriate while also being great for an evening out. The deep v-neck, coming together at a diamond shaped centerpiece, is incredibly flattering. The fabric flows gently over your skin and stretches throughout your pregnancy. Maternal America's summer tops fashionable, flattering, and comfortable! They are so cute you will want to wear them long after your baby is born.
Overall, Maternal America's summer collection brings color, patterns, and great designs into play. You will feel and look great in whatever you choose to wear. Getting a few versatile pieces for your wardrobe is a great idea, many of which can be worn after pregnancy!
When you are pregnant, suddenly your shape and size are changing daily. What looks used to work well and flatter your figure may suddenly look ridiculous or unflattering on your evolving frame. This can be particularly challenging around the Holiday Season or for more dress-up occasions when you really want to look your best and not let pregnancy get in the way. Here are some general guidelines to dressing when pregnant according to you shape.
Generally When Pregnant
When you are pregnant don't be afraid to show some skin. A pregnant body can be very sensual and you still have great assets. So don't be shy about showing off great legs or pretty arms, shoulders or going strapless. Be sure to define your shape the way your like it. You want some definition to you pregnant belly without going uncomfortably skin tight. Grecian can be flattering as it can drape over your curves to show off the gist of your belly without showing your belly button in detail. However, too big equates to baggy which only makes you look bigger. An empire waist looks that are more contained look great on almost any pregnant body type. Belting dresses beneath the bust can create this look. Deep shades like teal and plum that are popular this season are flattering on pregnant shapes, particularly if you are further along than busy patterns or metallics
If you are the busty type you are probably three times more busty when you are expecting. Your body has taken on new dimensions and everything you try on seems to be accentuated by your pronounced cleavage. A good look to try to de-emphasize the chest is a flirty dress in one shade. By sticking to one shade of color your figure becomes elongated and you look much leaner and slimmer.
Also going with a more tailored or structured dress that gives you a clear silhouette, you better define your shape. For example, instead of going hippie chic, go with better bust support and strong vertical pleats. A hemmed and pleated knee length flirty dress with a structured chest and wide straps will do wonders for your figure. Finally, always look to support and lift. Forget strapless or backless dresses as you will never find the level of support you need. Always look for a dress or top with wide enough shoulder straps for a supportive bra.
A skirt or dress with inverted pleats keeps hips looking narrower. An A-line skirt is also a good choice for camouflaging hips. Even just a flared hem de-emphasizes the hips. Again choose structure in defining your silhouette so you show off a small empire waist and don't get swallowed in something loose and baggy. Remember to show off your best assets, so if you have pretty shoulders, flaunt them with a sleeveless bodice dress, strapless or one shoulder style. Draw attention to your best body parts up high - look for a jeweled neckline or brighter colors around the face or neck. Even wearing some bling jewelry will keep the gaze upwards.
If you are petite and you don't want to tower in platform shoes or stilettos when you are pregnant, there are some other tricks to add some length to your frame. If you have great legs, then show them off. Go for shorter hems and sheerer hose to elongate your shape. Show off some skin somewhere- arms and necklines are a great place to start. Pleats and bubble hem can work well if its not overdone - you want to add some volume without looking like a powder puff. Accessorize smartly. A few well chosen pieces that don't weigh you down is all you need to add some height.
If you are tall, then you have a lot of choices. Tall frames can get away with prints and patterns, horizontal stripes and all the usual hazards most women need to avoid can actually be more flattering when tall. Do make sure your clothing fits you well. Beware of cuts that tent out and make you appear bigger than you are or that miss your curves. Sleek and fitted always looks better no matter how far along you are in your pregnancy. Do be careful with super short hemlines and minis as they can make you look like a giant whose clothes got shrunk in the dryer. Otherwise, have fun with accessories as you can get away with more to wear as you have more space to fill!
So whatever your shape, find some maternity clothes that fit and flatter your figure and make you feel as beautiful and sexy and as you truly are. Bottom line, if you feel great in the clothes you are in, then you will project that to those around you.
I love when the warm weather starts each spring and summer season because it means I can finally bring out my favorite fashion staple: the dress. Whether it is a sundress, a maxi-dress, or a cute LBD, I wear dresses every chance I get. For a variety of reasons they have become my favorite fashion staple. Dresses are effortless, comfortable, and easily create a fashionable outfit with just one piece of clothing. They can be dressed up or dressed down, worn for a night out on the town or for a day at the beach. When nursing, dresses are a great staple to pepper your wardrobe with, as you will find comfort, practicality, and fashion all in one. Nursing dresses are stylish yet functional, and the variety available ensures that every nursing mom will find something to fit her needs.
Maxi dresses are huge this season, as they are a stylish and comfortable option for expectant and nursing mothers. A hugely popular option this year is the Beach Maternity/Nursing Dress from 1 in the Oven. Effortlessly classic chic yet trendy at the same time, this gauze fabric dress will keep you comfortable all day long. The light-weight fabric makes this perfect for the beach, a lunch around town, or running errands. When paired with cute strappy sandals or flip-flops, an entire look is instantly created. The gorgeous neckline and empire waist are incredibly flattering, and the flowing fabric creates a sophisticated look. Easy nursing access is designed with a four-button closure, making this dress both a practical and stylish option.
Another maxi dress which is a great stylish option for your spring and summer wardrobe is the Maternity & Nursing Maxi Dress from Japanese Weekend. A v-neck design creates a long and slimming look and the empire-waist highlights the smallest part of your body. A geometric tribal pattern highlights one of the biggest trends this season and creates an allover cohesive look. With easy and discreet nursing access, this nursing maxi dress is perfect for a day or night out on the town.
When the weather is warm, throwing on a cute sundress is a quick and easy way for a busy mother to instantly put together an entire outfit. One of my favorite dresses is Maternal America’s Nursing Dress. This sexy and sophisticated dress can easily be worn dressed down with gladiator sandals and a big bag, or dressed up as the perfect LBD with heels and a shiny clutch. The crossover design with wide shoulder straps provides support for the nursing mother while also creating easy and discreet nursing access. The super-soft fabric drapes stylishly over your belly if you choose to wear this as a maternity dress, or gently hides your postpartum baby weight. Effortlessly stylish yet practical, this nursing dress is a fantastic option for nursing mothers.
An incredibly cute and stylish LBD is the Lucy Maternity/Nursing Dress from 1 in the Oven. Hitting just above the knee and designed with a flattering scoop neck, this dress is incredibly versatile. Easily dressed down with flats or sandals during the day or dressed up at night with some funky heels, it can be worn in a variety of different settings. Made of super soft Modal fabric and designed with a flattering empire waist, you will be comfortable and stunning. Easy and discreet nursing access is created by simply lifting the top layer at the empire line to access two nursing slits. One of the best features of this dress is the gentle pleating at the belly, which helps to hide and postpartum baby weight. This LBD is comfy, stylish, and will fulfill your nursing mom needs!
Overall, adding several go-to dresses to your spring and summer wardrobes is a great idea for the busy nursing mother. A dress creates a quick, stylish, and comfortable outfit very easily, leaving you feeling and looking beautiful. Whether you choose to dress it up or down, a nursing dress is a perfect staple for the busy mother.
At the Academy Awards this past weekend, expectant mother Paula Patton looked absolutely stunning. Co-starring in the Oscar winning film "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire", in which Paula demonstrates her incredible acting abilities; she rocked the red carpet at seven months pregnant. Married to her high school sweetheart, singer and songwriter Robin Thicke, they are expecting their first child (a boy to be named Julian!) in May. This entire awards season Paula has looked gorgeous in every gown she chose, with her maternity red carpet style being impeccable at every event.
At the "Keep a Child Alive" gala in November, Paula wore a gorgeous and modern cocktail dress. Still at the beginning months of her pregnancy, she chose a visually interesting abstract dress. The abstract design makes an otherwise simple dress modern, and the shape of the dress fit her beautifully. The longer sleeve is sophisticated and also draws the attention upwards. With a simple, pulled back updo, Paula truly looks stunning. For a similar look that can be dressed up or down, try the Beaded Print Dress from Maternal America. The abstract pattern and ¾ length sleeve mirror Paula's flattering look. A v-neckline elongates the neck and frames the face beautifully, while the bead detailing at the bust creates a great shape and visual interest. From day to night, this dress works for many occasions.
In January, Paula was seen at many red carpet events, looking equally gorgeous at every one. At the People's Choice Awards she wore a gorgeous LBD (little black dress) which was very figure flattering and a great choice for expectant mothers. The deep v-neck creates a longer and leaner look, while the gathering underneath the bust accentuates the smallest part of the body while still flattering the baby bump. For a similar style but more casual look try the Organic D&A Maternity/Nursing Dress from Japanese Weekend. A v-neck and empire waist is figure flattering. Like Paula's dress, small cap sleeves are cute and trendy (and great for those with smaller shoulders, as they balance out the body). For a great night out look, Maternal America's Beaded Diamond Dress provides the same great neck and bust line, creating an elegant yet sexy look.
One of my favorite looks of Paula's many gorgeous red carpet appearances was at the Golden Globes in mid-January. Her dress absolutely wowed me! The strapless gown accentuated her shoulders and created a beautiful neckline. The cinched empire waist drew attention to the smallest part of the body, above the natural waist, and then gracefully skimmed her body, creating a long and lean look. The sparkling of the dress, combined with the gorgeous jewelry she wore, really made a statement. A similar red carpet look is the Sleeveless Maxi Maternity Dress from Olian. Although not strapless, the intricate strapped design draws the attention upwards, creating a beautiful neckline. A delicate empire waist gathers just underneath the bust and drapes beautifully to the ground. Adding bold sparkling earrings and a great bracelet create the jeweled look of Paula's Golden Globe worthy gown.
At the Academy Awards just last week, Paula hit another high style note with her beautiful red gown. At seven months pregnant, she looked radiant and stunning, celebrating her baby bump and accentuating all her best features. A wide v-neck elongates the neck and shows off her gorgeous shoulders. With the added ruffle at the neck (a hot spring trend!) a visually interesting neckline is created. Since there is more skin showing on top, a longer dress is the perfect way to go, as it balances out the entire look. I love that Paula chose to wear red. It makes a statement, looking classy and subtly sexy in one. Paula has her hair pulled back, which is always a great option when wearing a dress with an intricate neckline. Also, if your shoulders or collarbone are one of your favorite features, it is a great way to show them off.
Throughout all stages of her pregnancy, Paula has looked stunning on the red carpet. With her growing baby bump, she demonstrates great ways to wear maternity fashions. Although most of us will not be walking the red carpet, certain aspects of her gowns work well for any occasion. A gorgeous neckline, an empire waist, or some funky jewelry looks great for many maternity clothes. Congratulations Paula and Robin! We can't wait to see baby Julian!
Floral prints, while always in style when warm weather approaches, are even more popular this season. From gorgeous maxi dresses to fluttery blouses, floral patterns are in bloom. Whether worn as an addition to an outfit on a purse or shoe or worn as an all over print on a dress, floral designs are making a big statement. A floral print will really bring a fresh feel to your spring and summer wardrobes.
Pregnancy is a great time to experiment with florals as you really are in full bloom with your ever changing body. Match your glow with a floral that is just right for your style and personality. Floral patterns and styles are so diverse now, you can look fresh and fashionable in the right floral style. Keep a few tips in mind when wearing a floral print and you are sure to look beautiful and feel confident!
1) Choosing the right size is always important when it comes to clothes, especially when dealing with floral prints. A simple rule to keep in mind (as Stacy and Clinton always reiterate on What Not to Wear) is to keep the size of the print in proportion with the size of your body. If you are petite, look for smaller flower sizes so that you will not look overpowered. If you are taller or have a larger build many sizes look good, but larger floral prints always look great.
2) If choosing to wear a floral print dress, top, or skirt, keep the accessories simple. An all over maxi dress looks stunning when paired with simple sandals or espadrilles. You can easily pull your favorite color from the dress and find a great necklace, bracelet, or shoe in that color. If you choose to wear a great floral top, pair it with a neutral bottom, and vice versa. By keeping the pattern only on the clothing and accessorizing with complimentary colors, a polished look is created.
3) If you are really worried about looking frumpy in florals or can't get the kitchen curtains out of your mind, then go for the more abstract paisley patterns. This also gives a refreshing crisp look for spring while sure to be modern and a far cry from curtains or your mother's wardrobe.
4) If wearing an all over floral print is not for you, try accessorizing with florals in a small but stylish way. A great pair of flats, a large ring in the shape of a flower, or a floral print scarf all make great additions to your favorite outfit and will really provide a stylish sense of spring.
From dainty flower necklaces to an abstract floral print skirt, there is a way to incorporate the floral style into your wardrobe. Most of all it is important that you feel comfortable in your choice of florals that match your sense of personal style. You can make florals edgy by your shoe and jewelry choice and simply by breaking it up a bit with a pair of leggings for a sleeker look. Feel confident and comfortable in your floral choice and anything you choose will look great!
When I think of stylish sophistication, subtle sexiness, and pregnancy, I immediately think of Amy Adams. Incredibly talented, beautiful, and expecting her first baby (with fiance Darren Le Gallo) this spring, Amy is one stylish expectant mother. Although I love her as her endearing characters in Enchanted and Julie & Julia and was extremely impressed by her Oscar nominated role in Doubt, I simply cannot stop raving about her pregnancy wardrobe. From a casual day around town to the Golden Globes, Amy looks radiant, maintaining her signature classic style throughout her pregnancy.
For casual wear, Amy has stayed stylish and comfortable throughout her pregnancy. In the earlier months, she was spotted on a shopping trip in a cute plaid top and boot-cut jean. Her top is perfect for a casual outing. Its loose shape is comfortable while not overwhelming her frame, and the trendy plaid pattern creates visual interest. This top combined with a pair of fitted boot-cut jeans is the perfect combination, as the structure of the jeans is balanced out by the loose-fitting top. The boot-cut jean tends to be the most universally flattering jean, since it balances out the entire shape of the leg, and a dark wash denim is incredibly figure flattering.
If you are just beginning to show and are not quite ready for a maternity jean, grab a Bellaband to wear over the waist of your pre-pregnancy jeans, and you will be comfortable and fashionable. Amy was spotted in another flattering and comfortable daytime outfit in early January, combining black leggings with a long empire-waist top. The leggings are a great option, particularly as you get farther along in your pregnancy and want a bit more stretch. Paired with a flowing top (yet with an empire waist to emphasize the smallest part of the torso), this outfit is both comfy and flattering!
From daywear to evening wear, Amy makes a seamless transition. In early January, Amy premiered her romantic comedy Leap Year and truly demonstrated the definition of red carpet maternity fashion. In a stunning red dress which hit just below the knee, she could not have looked more beautiful! This dress works for so many reasons. One, the fabric has movement and does not cling to her body. Secondly, the empire waist, cinched by a wide ribbon, defines the thinnest part of her body while celebrating her baby bump. Finally, the intricate neckline provides a frame for her gorgeous face. This dress is a great style for an expectant mother at any special occasion!
At the Golden Globes, Amy chose a similar style dress yet with a more structured feel. Once again, the empire-waist, knee length dress created a beautiful shape on her body and the wide shoulder strap provided bust support. With a thicker fabric, the dress provides excellent structure and a truly refined look. I love that her hair is pulled back, as it showcases her face and creates a sleek look. From cocktail parties to galas, a dress in this cut is incredibly figure flattering.
A final piece in Amy's wardrobe that really grabbed my attention was the beautiful coat she wore to the taping of The David Letterman Show in January. Grey with red piping on the belt, this coat was flattering and stylish. The empire waist was perfect for her growing belly, while the structured shoulders added shape and definition. This coat is a great way to pull together an outfit!
Amy Adams is an incredibly talented actress who looks radiant both onscreen and off. Her pregnancy style, like her acting, is impeccable and I cannot wait to see her new baby this spring.
When you think about all the clothing you need when you are pregnant, it can be overwhelming. What fits one day may not fit the next. Seasons change, your belly changes daily, but your life continues on and you need clothes to wear. Well you don't have to dress frumpy just because you are pregnant and you don't need to break the bank in stocking your wardrobe for the year. Here are 8 essentials for every pregnant woman's wardrobe to get you started:
- A great pair of jeans. The most important factor in maternity jeans is that they are comfortable with plenty of stretch. If you wore jeans frequently before you were pregnant, chances are you will want to wear them while you are pregnant. You don't have to sacrifice comfort for style and settle for "mom jeans" just because you are expecting. There are some very fashionable maternity jeans on the market today which not only look great; they don't look like maternity jeans or "mom jeans." Personal favorites include Maternal America's Megan Jean. This jean was voted by Fit Pregnancy as the Best All Around Style Jean on the market out of 280 jeans they tested.
- Maternity Leggings. Yes, leggings really are back. Many of us who grew up in the 80s didn't trust this trend last year, or even the year before that. Well, leggings are here to stay for a while anyway and frankly they are great for maternity and are super comfortable to wear. Bella Band makes some of the best fitting and durable leggings around with a stretch panel front. These leggings go great with a tunic, skirt, dress or extra long maternity top. They are very comfortable and warm in cool weather. Leggings come in a wide variety of styles including side ruching, lace, and cropped varieties along with an array of colors. I suggest buying at least one pair of black maternity leggings. If you find you are grabbing them every week, then branch out with a few more styles and colors.
- A short black dress. Everyone needs a versatile black dress in their wardrobe, pregnant or not because there are always events that come up which call for one. Pick an easy jersey or rayon/spandex blend fabric that does not need ironing and can easily stretch to fit your ever changing figure. Dress it up with a jacket or dress it down with leggings. Jazz it up with some necklaces and heels or wear it casual with boots. A versatile black short black dress is more wearable than a maxi and it is easier to move and work in as well.
- Extra long short sleeve tops. Shade makes a great fitting maternity Baby Tee. This top is extra long, hugs your curves and stretches where it needs to. You will want one of these great pieces in every color. Wear it alone in warm weather with shorts, capris or jeans. Layer it in colder weather under a cardigan. Wear it to work with a blazer. You will even want to wear this top postpartum as the extra long length hides your postpartum belly.
- A Stylish Henley is another must-have. This is a great casual everyday go-to item. One in the oven makes a comfortable extra long maternity Henley in long sleeves. They also have a 3/4 sleeve waffle weave nursing Henley that is long enough to be worn for maternity as well.
- A lightweight scarf is a must for your winter maternity wardrobe. A scarf can add both warmth and style to your ensemble. Check out Maternal America's Nursing Scarf. There is a multitude of different ways to wear this scarf which works as a nursing cover as well.
- A Wrap Top. The Wrap Top style has been around for years, springing from the Wrap Dress. This style works so easily with a blossoming belly while still offering an attractive neckline and overall style. Japanese Weekend's Stripe Wrap Maternity/Nursing Top is an urban chick 3/4 sleeve charcoal wrap maternity and nursing top with an accent stripe along the neckline and sleeves. You can wear this top to the office with black trousers or casual with jeans.
- A Maternity Hoodie. Both 1 in the Oven and Japanese Weekend have adorable maternity hoodies which double as nursing hoodies with easy and discreet nursing access. This is a great top to grab on colder days when you just need an extra layer. Most pregnant women find sweaters too contricting, unflattering and hot. Hoodies are a great way to get some added warmth without putting on a heavy sweater. They also give an effortless trendy casual look for any day of the week.
So get yourself some wearable and fashionable maternity essentials to get yourself through the next 9 months with ease and style.
