National Breastfeeding Week in Ghana

National Breastfeeding Week was launched in Koforidu as a part of the campaign for exclusive breastfeeding in Ghana. The Theme is “Understanding the Past, Planning, the Future, Celebrating 10 years of the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding; Reviving Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative In Ghana.”

Research has shown that children who were not exclusively breastfed the first six months of life had increased risk of asthma, allergy, acute respiratory infections, nutrient deficiencies, cancers, obesity, and diarrhea and reduced cognitive development.

This campaign is also aiming at educating parents in the importance of not giving a baby water for the six months since in the past babies in this culture were traditionally given all types of drinks as infants including water, cod liver oil, gripe water and other liquids which is detrimental to their development and health.

The few mothers who attempt to practice exclusive breastfeeding in Ghana often find the social support system challenging as their mothers, grandmothers and in-laws and even pharmacy shops have sabotaged their efforts by encouraging them to supplement their babies with cod liver oil and gripe water to boost their babies’ systems.

Dr Iyabode Olusanmi, the country representative of UNICEF, who performed the launching, said the reduction in the exclusive breastfeeding meant that thousands of children had a lesser chance of surviving childhood just because they were not breast-fed early and exclusively, several children were being exposed to the risk of diarrhea and other infections and malnutrition and stunting growth would continue to plague children.

She called on the GHS to focus their attention on achieving the set goals for exclusive breastfeeding in the communities to reach mothers, fathers and husbands, older women, mothers-in-law and all those who played critical roles in influencing feeding practices in young families.

The World Breastfeeding Week campaign was launched globally about 20 years ago to raise awareness of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in reducing infant mortality.

Megan Fox Looks Pretty In A Floral Maternity Dress

Megan Fox showed us once again that pregnancy does not have to be frumpy fashion. The 26 year old actress rocked a pretty black floral knee length dress while out with a gal pal in Los Angeles on Sunday (August 19). She also paired this stylish dress with some fearless high red velvet platform open toe shoes for a truly fierce look to offset the more conservative dress.

Megan has an upcoming film, This is 40, which is the sequel to the hit movie Knocked Up and also stars Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jason Segal and Chris Dowd.

Florals are a big trend this season in dresses, tops and even swimwear fashion. Some great maternity dresses that play up the floral print are Japanese Weekend’s Red Maternity Sun Dress. This dress would look great with some red pumps, even if you don’t go for the red velour platforms shoes Megan sports!

Olian’s Short Sleeve Maternity Dress is another pretty choice with a shorter hemline and a while backdrop with fushia flowers and stripe accents on the sleeves, neckline and empire waistline.

Also, Olian’s Floral Ombre Dress is season favorite with fitted black bodice top, turquoise waistline and white, black and turquoise floral print apron skirt that is just stunning. This dress can be worn anywhere from a wedding to lunch with friends.

So, throw in some floral prints and play up your feminine side like Megan during your pregnancy. Also, have some fun with your footwear, but you may want to play it on the safe side in those last months of pregnancy when your balance may be challenged!

Reese Witherspoon Welcomes Baby Number 3

Congratulations to Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth who welcomed Tennessee James into their family on Thursday, Sept 27th. Her rep says, “Both mom and baby are healthy and the entire family is thrilled.”

Baby Tennessee is Reese’s 3rd child but firth with husband Jim Toth whom he married in March 2011. Reese is already mom to Ava, 13 and Deacon, 8 from her prior marriage.

A source said Reese and her husband were eager to conceive right way. “Right after the wedding, Reese expressed a desire to have a baby with Jim.”

Reese, always in step with fashion, showed off her growing baby bump around the world the past spring and summer. We enjoyed seeing Reese’s many looks and styles throughout her pregnancy, whether it was an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival or lunch out with friends. We will miss checking out Reese’s weekly pregnancy look; however we look forward to seeing her cute baby photos soon!

Kerri Walsh Expecting Baby #3 and Pregnant DURING Olympic Games!!!

If you did not already find Kerri Walsh completely mind blowing impressive with her 3rd Olympic Gold in beach volleyball with partner Misty May, but she also just revealed she was 5 weeks pregnant while competing in London 6 weeks ago while achieving that Gold Medal!

“When I was throwing my body around fearlessly and going for gold for our country, I was pregnant,” Walsh Jennings jokes.

While we don’t recommend beach volleyball as the preferred sport for expecting moms, I’m sure Kerri has probably scaled back on her body hurling in the sand now that she knows of the reality of her pregnancy. She even admitted feeling a little “off” during the games, although I’m sure her opponents didn’t feel that way about her play.

“I thought it could have been the stress of the Games and travel throws your schedule off,” she explains. “At some point, you’re late and then you start feeling something. And I definitely started feeling something in London.”

Kerri, 34, and her husband, Casey Jennings, will welcome baby number 3 in early April to join their sons, Sundance, 2 and Joseph, 3. Kerri says this pregnancy is a lot different than her previous pregnancies with her sons and is experiencing morning sickness every day.

“This little one is kicking my butt! The first two were pretty easy, but with this one, I’m sick every day,” she admits. “I’ve got some awesome acne. I just feel different.”

Well she sounds a little human, but I’m sure those washboard abs will pop out again by May!

All joking aside, we admire 3 times Gold Olympian Supermom Kerri and wish her all the best with her pregnancy.
