  • Nursing Clothes – The Smart Choice!

When you’re pregnant it’s hard to even think ahead to having your baby or to imagine a day of not being pregnant. It seems that every day you roll out of bed (since rolling is the only way you can move at times), you are a bit bigger than the last time you checked in the mirror or tried to count your toes. Meanwhile you are quickly determining that your pre-pregnancy extra loose clothing will no longer adequately fit your expanding belly or simply looks ridiculous on your now very pregnant body. Welcome to the club!

The idea of spending a lot of money on maternity clothes is not always highly appealing, although you do need new clothes to comfortably fit your shape (fast!) since losing weight is not an option, nor should it be. For most of us it’s the first time in our life that we have our Doctor’s permission to steadily gain weight and eat more to be healthy, this should be outstanding news, right? On the surface this task seems super fun in so many ways, but it can suddenly become a very inconvenient feat in that we quickly find out our wardrobe options are dwindling fast and our belly shows no sign of slowing its runaway expansion march!

My advice to expecting women who would like to look stylish while not spending a fortune on a huge new wardrobe of maternity clothes is this:

    1. Invest smartly in a number of everyday items that you can mix and match in your maternity wardrobe. Definitely invest in a good pair of maternity jeans with a lot of stretch, crops and yoga pants and a few casual skirts that can go with everything in your casual wardrobe. Also get some great basic tops in a variety of colors with varying sleeve lengths depending on the season you are in or approaching. ¾ sleeves are a great option as they work year round and are comfortable inside and out unless it is truly hot outside. Also, pregnant women run a little hotter, so ¾ sleeves work well in cooler months too.
    2. If you need a business wardrobe for work, then also look to find some staple skirts and dress slacks that you can wear over and over. Blacks and taupe or khaki colors can work for any time of the year with a light stretchy rayon/spandex mix and plenty of room for an expanding belly. Dress pants and pencil skirts are not the thing that people remember, so you will need to buy less in terms of slacks and skirts than blouses and tops.
    3. For maternity tops, go light on patterns as they are easy to remember and opt for more solids as they can be interchanged more easily. However it’s important to find at least a few prints you do enjoy wearing – remember pregnancy is a time where you can dress up more because you’re pregnant.  After all, a pretty maternity dress can provide comfort with style with little effort. Maternity dresses will generally easily fit an expanding belly without troubling waistbands and give you a beautiful polished look in just a minute! You can sport a print wrap maternity dress to the office, PTA meeting, out to Saturday lunch with friends or date night with your husband. Just make sure you like it!
    4. Invest in a number of really good nursing bras and maternity underwear. Now trust me this is not an area where you want to skimp. There is nothing more uncomfortable than a too tight bra when you are pregnant or restrictive underwear. Your rib cage is expanding fast while you are pregnant in addition to your bra cup size. Your pre-pregnancy bras, even the sports bras will only take you so far and as your bust will grow before your belly. A great way to economize with your new bra collection is to invest in nursing bras (instead of just bigger bras or maternity bras) that fits you while you are pregnant. This way you can wear it both before and after and even nurse in it. Which brings us to the next point….
    5. Buy maternity clothes that double as nursing clothes and transition wear. You will find that once you have your baby, unless you are truly a super freak (and there are a few out there that literally walk out of the delivery room minus the basketball and practically into their pre-pregnancy wardrobe), you will most likely not fit back into your pre-pregnancy wardrobe for some time. If you choose to nurse, and we sincerely hope you do, then you will be grateful for clothing in your wardrobe that is specifically made for nursing, no fuss involved. This is particularly useful in the early stages of nursing when both you and your baby are on a steep learning curve and generally anything that makes nursing easier makes life a thousand times easier. Also, transition wear clothing that is made to stretch where you need it and look good on you after you have your baby will help camouflage a postpartum belly. All of these factors add to your quality of life before and after you have your baby and can help stretch your dollar with your maternity clothes investment.

Remember pregnancy does not last a lifetime, although it may seem like it at times. Why not enjoy this time in your life and dress in a way that is both comfortable and versatile for both during and after your pregnancy. It’s easy to look good and stylish with a few good staples and fun prints in your wardrobe. Enjoy the journey and shopping!

  • Spring Maternity Trend -- Floral Prints

As the weather heats up and Spring approaches it is time for a maternity wardrobe shift into lighter fabrics, lighter colors and spring themed prints. One print that never goes out of style for the Spring Season is florals. The floral design is a perfect addition to your ensemble whether worn as an addition or accessory to your outfit such as a shoe, purse or light scarf or as the main statement as in a gorgeous floor length maxi dress, florals are designed to bring a light hearted positive mood to all you represent.

    Maternal America Asymetric Ruffle Dress

Pregnancy is the perfect time to experiment with fashion and prints that you might not normally wear in your everyday life. Florals patterns also happen to be in style and in full bloom this spring, just as you are in your pregnancy! Now is a great time to try out a fluttery floral blouse or Babydoll dress. Check out the beautiful maternity swimwear floral patterns that are a great way to add some flowers to your wardrobe.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when selecting a floral print:

    1) Choosing the right size is most important when it comes to maternity clothes, especially when dealing with floral prints. A simple rule to remember is to keep the size of the print in proportion with the size of your body, allowing a little room to bloom when you are expecting. If you are petite, look for smaller flower sizes so that you will not look overpowered. If you are taller or have a larger build you can go larger on your floral prints and look great.

    2) When choosing to wear a floral print dress, top, or skirt, keep the accessories simple to keep the look balanced. A floral maternity maxi dress looks stunning when paired with simple sandals or espadrille and non flashy jewelry. You can pull your favorite color from the dress and find a great necklace, bracelet, or shoe in that color. If you choose to wear a colorful floral maternity top, pair it with a neutral bottom or vice versa. By keeping the pattern only on the clothing and accessorizing with complimentary colors, a polished sleek look is created.

    3) If you are really concerted about looking frumpy in florals or can't get Kim Kardashian's infamous Met Gala maternity dress out of your mind, then go for the more abstract paisley patterns. This also gives a fresh look for spring while sure to be modern and a far cry from your mother's curtains or your grandmother's wardrobe.

Japanese Weekend Red Sun Maternity Dress4) Break it up with the flowers. You can make florals edgy by your shoe and jewelry choice and simply by pairing a floral top with a pair of solid leggings. A great pair of flats, a large ring in the shape of a flower, or a floral print scarf all make great additions to your maternity outfit if you want to go light with the flowers while giving a nod to the flowers.

Most important is to follow your personal style. Choose a floral print that is truly you and that represents your personality. It can be a dainty abstract pastel floral pattern to a large statement floral maxi skirt with strong fuchsia colors and black contrast.

Find and wear what makes you happy and have some fun with your maternity fashion this Spring!

  • TummyStyle’s 9th Anniversary!!

Happy April’s Fool Day! Today we celebrate TummyStyle’s 9th Anniversary! On this day 9 years ago, my daughter Audrey was 4 months old and she accompanied me in her car seat to the County Office in Auburn, California where we officially filed our business license for TummyStyle. Although the site was not alive for another 6 months, it was the inception day of our business.

I know April Fool’s Day is often a prankster and practical joke day, our business is not a joke and I view April Fool's Day as a good omen of things to come. I also view it as the official start of Spring and of new birth, which is fitting for this website which is dedicated to new mothers and new birth.

Our mission from the beginning has been to support, inform, inspire and offer creative fashion pieces for expecting moms and new moms. As a nursing mother for each of my three children I understand how hard it can be to find fashionable nursing clothes that are both flattering and made to easily accommodate breastfeeding (without looking like it!). After not being able to find a nursing dress for my goddaughter’s baptism as I was also a new nursing mom to my own baby, I was inspired to start my own website where women could find fashionable nursing and maternity clothes without needing to leave their house. This idea soon expanded to encompass all aspects of maternity and nursing fashion including maternity swimwear and nursing pajamas and loungewear.

Through our blog which we have maintained for over 4 years, we aspire to inform moms of the latest research on pregnancy, breastfeeding, nutrition, exercise, parenting issues as well as indulge in fun topics on maternity fashion and celebrity pregnancy. We know our site can’t be all things to all people, so we focus on our niche and hope you enjoy your stop here and maybe find a cute fashion piece or two to add to your maternity wardrobe.

We thank all of our customers and supporters throughout the years who have visited our site and supported our business. We wish you health and happiness with your pregnancy, babies and life!

  • Maternity Fashion From Maternal America

There are so many designers for maternity clothing, that it can often be difficult to know where to start looking. One designer that stands out is Maternal America. They are known for fresh and current maternity clothing designs, as well as having clothing that is functional and comfortable. For the warmer months, there are several must-have items for one’s maternity clothing wardrobe, and Maternal America has great options.

Every expectant mother needs the perfect summer maternity dress that is versatile, comfortable, and makes one feel amazing. The Maternal America Paisley Tie Maternity Dress is a stunning option that can be dressed down or up, giving it great versatility. It features a navy blue scoop neck bodice made out of super soft and light-weight material. Cap sleeves provide a flattering and versatile look. The skirt is a beautiful paisley print in orange, blue, and purple. Its design is unique and eye-catching. The bodice ends directly underneath the bust so that an empire waist design is created, which is very figure flattering. One can wear this dress to one’s baby shower, a birthday, an evening on the town, or simply out to lunch with one’s family. For a more casual look, pair it with nude or navy flat sandals. For a dressier look, try a great pair of navy or nude wedges, a few bracelets, and some stud earrings.

Another must-have item for expectant mothers is the perfect maternity top. Maternity tops can be mixed and matched with a variety of bottoms, from jeans to shorts to skirts. A beautiful choice is the Maternal America Maternity Halter Top. It has a modern and slightly tribal print in a mix of burnt orange, black, and white. The oval type pattern is the perfect size and creates a V-type of shape that is incredibly figure flattering. The unique neckline is a bit higher but shows off one’s shoulders, and a cute tie is at the front. It has a nice and flattering flow to it. For a casual look, pair it with jeans and flip flops. For a day at the office, pair it with a black maternity pencil skirt and black ballet flats. For that special evening out, it can be paired with white, black, or dark blue slim cut jeans, a great pair of wedges, and some gorgeous gold jewelry.

MA-P702_1For pants, a summer necessity is a great white pair of jeans. White is refreshing and stylish. Many women are adverse to white as they fear it will not be flattering. However, it is actually the cut of the pants, not the color, which creates the perfect flattering shape. The Maternal America Cigarette Maternity Jeans in white are a great choice. The slim cut of the leg is actually very slimming, and balances the looser look of a maternity top very well. Pair these jeans with any color. They can also be worn with flip flops, ballet flats, heels, or any type of shoe one prefers! Their versatility, flattering cut, and refreshing style make them the perfect addition to one’s maternity wardrobe.

A final must-have for one’s warm weather maternity closet is the perfect maternity swimsuit. One gorgeous option is the Maternal America Eva Maternity Swimwear. This tankini features a halter style top with adjustable ties for the perfect fit. The top is a white and navy striped pattern, creating a nautical feel. Light padding at the bust creates a smooth look. The bikini bottoms are a solid navy to compliment the top perfectly, and side-ties allow them to be adjusted for one’s utmost comfort. This maternity swimsuit is perfect for the beach or pool!

Maternal America has a variety of clothing options that are all stylish and comfortable. From dresses to swimwear, there is something for everyone.

  • Vanity Fair Names Kate Middleton “Best Dressed Pregnant Lady”

Kate Middleton recently topped Vanity Fair’s Best-Dressed Pregnant Ladies list, which was not a big surprise considering her flawless and varied pregnancy fashion. This new list is part of Vanity Fair’s International Best-Dressed Challenge. Vanity Fair explains their choice of Middleton:

“At every life stage—courtship, marriage, and now pregnancy—her classic, insta-iconic pieces have inspired and influenced the wardrobes of sweethearts, brides, and mothers-to-be, respectively. The duchess conceals her (bare minimum of a) bump with three-quarter-length coats and short skirts that also help to draw attention to enviably still-svelte stems.”

Some pretty fancy wordage which we interpret as meaning she dresses well and looks good!

Although we loved Kate’s parade of stylish cross over buttoned coats and patterned tights, we look forward to her spring dress selections as her bump grows. I’m sure she will continue to deserve her top ranking for International Best Dressed Pregnant Ladies!

  • Halle Berry Stuns in Black Cut Out Maternity Gown!

Halle Berry does not seem like an expecting mom of “advanced maternal age” at 46 as she is looking positively glowing with her growing baby bump. She has been recently promoting her film in Brazil in a number of figure-hugging outfits which show off her growing bump. She and fiancé Olivier Martinez will welcome a child, rumored to be a boy, later this year.

Halle looked gorgeous at the South American premiere of her film in a black cut-out maternity gown with spider web lace accented on the sides. Her film, a thriller with Brad Anderson and Abigail Breslin recently hit theatres.

“I feel fantastic. This has been the biggest surprise of my life to tell you the truth,” Halle told CNN a few weeks ago.

“I thought I was kind of past the point where this could be a reality for me. So it’s been a big surprise and the most wonderful.”

Berry’s next project will be the much anticipated sequel of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

We look forward to seeing more of Halle’s gorgeous maternity style!

  • Maternal America Eva Maternity Swimwear

There is nothing more trendy than the Maternal America Eva Maternity Swimwear this season. The French style navy stripes look like something right off the Paris runway. The thin navy stripes against the white background makes a real presence. Not only that, but the thin lines break up any edges and have a real slimming effect.

The bottoms are a navy that matches the navy stripes. The bottoms tie at the sides which allow for adjustability throughout the pregnancy. They sit just below the belly and are very comfortable.

The top can also work well as a strapless (as long as you aren't too busty!). Just untie the halter string and make a bow on the front. The sides at the bust have a semi-stiff stays which do add in some more support.

Overall, this is one of the hottest and best selling maternity swimsuits of the season. Great styling and fashion to keep you looking great throughout your pregnancy!

  • Maternity Clothes Of Women In 1595

Here's a painting by Marcus Gheeraerts II called "Portrait of an Unknown Lady." It's a nice example of a royalty in a maternity dress. The woman's outfit is elegantly embellished in pearls on top of embellished lace. A structual bodice most likely provides a puffout of the sleeves. It was likely made out of silk or a fine cotton and took months to sew.

It is interesting to see a bit of uplift on the bra and the lady obviously needed a bit of extra support as is evidented by the four thin straps that likely go over the shoulders.

The Dutch style collar would have been uncomfortable but stylish for the period. The hairband pushed the hair into a heart shape. Her hair has added jewels most likely pearls and a rubies. Since there was no lipstick at the time, she would have used crushed red coral, but, seeing as the artist could make any modifications, he would have painted her lips a brighter red.

Guessing by her size, she's probably third trimester and would have had an awful time standing for such a long time. More likely is that her dress was put on a form  (or a stand in person) and she sat on a chair when the time came to paint her face and hands.

The artistry is very magnificent and shows a skill of white on grey to express depth and contour. Overall, it's a really beautiful dress but probably not all comfortable. A really nice show piece.
