  • Happy Birthday Audrey Hepburn!!

Today it is Audrey Hepburn’s birthday who is my all time favorite Hollywood actor, humanitarian and beautiful do-gooder. I have always loved Audrey Hepburn’s style, demeanor, acting, personal story and especially her heart for children and those underprivileged around the world.

This is one of the reasons I named my daughter, Audrey, who also has tremendous grace and charm, although I am trying to steer her clear of any Hollywood acting ambitions! However, she does enjoy dance and fashion, and for now that seems close enough to her namesake for me!

I recently learned that Audrey Hepburn was one of the first fashionistas of Hollywood. She was close friends with Givenchy who proudly dressed her for many a red carpet and award show events starting with their first collaboration for the movie, Sabrina. Although Givenchy was initially disappointed he was working with Audrey Hepburn, he was expecting Katherine Hepburn and had formed a movie wardrobe for her. He quickly changed his tune as he got to know Audrey and developed a deep respect and admiration for her that would last a lifetime. He later called her “his muse” as they formed a professional and personal lifetime friendship with many famous timeless styles designed around her input and image.

Audrey was a pioneer of many classic styles that still endure today. She sported the LBD as her daywear and evening wear in the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She also showed how personal style is not just about what you wear but how you carry it off. Sometimes less is more, along with some unabashed bright red lipstick and two pearl earrings.

Audrey was also a fan of the fitted black cropped pant and the classic loafer which she sported in the movie, Funny Face. There, alongside Fred Astaire, Audrey showed off her dancing chops as well as her whimsical attitude and comedic side. These looks she would also wear off the set for the rest of her life.

On Audrey, even the simple white collared shirt could be a class act. She gave menswear inspired fashion choices a flair of femininity and beauty. A basic white collared shirt could be the frame for a beautiful face and a smile and give an air of empowerment to a woman who wanted to be taken more seriously in her day. She often said a Givenchy collared shirt would make her feel more confident in her own skin. She showed how clothing and wardrobe choices were deeply personal choices around not only your body type, but your personality, identity and even your mood you wanted to portray (or improve!) They sent a message to the outside world about what you wanted to show of yourself and your soul and how you wanted to be received.

Audrey Hepburn is one of my biggest fashion inspirations. She is one of the reasons I was inspired to start a fashion business. Although I will never personally be as elegant or chic as she, I love her unselfish spirit of generosity and especially her boundless love and support of children all over the world. I think her spirit of love, kindness and real giving is her greatest gift of herself. It is that unaffected enduring essence of her that is captured in her photos, images and even her movies when we look back and see her true beauty of her physical self and soul as we remember her today.

Happy 85th Birthday Audrey!! We love you!!

  • Joyce Brothers Passes Away But Leaves Behind A Legacy For Women

We at TummyStyle were sad to hear of the passing of Joyce Brothers, popular TV and radio personality as well as women’s advocate who died Monday of respiratory failure in New York City. She was 85.

Born Joyce Diane Bauer in New York, Brothers earned her bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia. Joyce Brothers was a pioneer in television advice shows. She started her famous show as a pop psychologist in the 1950s and went on to enjoy a long career as a syndicated columnist, appearing in Good Housekeeping for four decades, an author and a film and television personality. She was a guest on Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show” almost 100 times.

Interestingly, Brother’s career as a TV and media personality and author came about unexpectantly. She had quit her teaching positions at Columbia University and Hunter College while her husband was still in medical school to care for their newborn. She believed her child’s optimal development depended on her primary care giving. However, due to their low income and financial distress in New York City on her husband’s residency salary, Brothers needed to find away to make some money.

As Brothers like to tell it, her multimedia career evolved “because we were hungry.” In order to earn some quick cash Brothers decided to try and become a contestant on a television quiz show. The show was called “The $64,000 Question” and quizzed contestants on their specific areas of expertise. In preparing for the show, Brothers memorized 20 volumes of a boxing encyclopedia. With this knowledge on boxing she went on to win the top prize, only the second person on the show to do this.

Even more amazingly Brothers entered the show a second time as a contestant and also answered each question correctly on boxing to win again and become one of the biggest winners in the history of television quiz shows. These wins made her an overnight celebrity and opened doors for her to appear on many talk shows and co-host the “Sports Showcast.”

A few years later Brothers was offered a position with NBC for on air advice on all sorts of taboo topics for the times, including marriage, love life, sex, and child rearing (yes, this was taboo at times) ,as well as menopause, impotence and sexual enjoyment. This advice show was so successful it became nationally telecast and usually broadcast in the late hours.

She also gave advice on numerous call-in radio programs, sometimes going live on air with advice. One cannot help but imagine that the sit-com Frazier would not been invented much less a hit without Brothers as a real pioneer in this venue. Countless television and radio personalities have followed in her footsteps to become celebrities today. Among them, Dr. Drew Pinsky, television personality and medical advice expert, offered his condolences,

"Knew nothing about her history on the $64,000 question, but I did know Joyce Brothers," he wrote on Twitter. "She was a pioneer and very knowledgeable."

Importantly Brothers was an advocate for women. In the 1970s she was credited for changing textbooks to remove a sexist bias. She argued that nonsexist cultures tended to be less warlike.

She wrote numerous advice books, including "Ten Days To A Successful Memory" (1964), "Positive Plus: The Practical Plan for Liking Yourself Better" (1995) and "Widowed" (1992).

Brothers is an example of someone who was not only caught in the winds of change with pregnancy and being a new mom to a newborn but as a relatable woman who had to make tough career and family choices. In her case she choose to leave behind a career only to find her family needed her financial support which ultimately led her to a better and more diverse career that suited her flexibility, experience and passions.

Brother’s life shows us that we should not place labels or restrictions on ourselves and our abilities, even after we “settle down” into motherhood and maybe feel our professional or creative lives are put on hold forever as we change diapers and multitask. She shows us that a woman in the 1950s could become an expert on men’s boxing and host a sports channel, something that has unheard of in her time. She could also pioneer Television advice shows and talk radio about the unexpected and real life taboo subjects that people are really interested in. She was a woman who was not only able to give to her child and her family as the needs arose but to also give the gift of herself , her advice, opinions and knowledge to the world that wanted to receive it. Women like Brothers are inspirational to us all as we admire her legacy.

  • Jessica Alba Credits Girdle For Post Baby Killer Abs

Jessica Alba, mother of two, recently revealed her secret to her amazing post baby body, a double corset day and night for three months following the births of each of her children!

“It was brutal; it’s not for everyone,” the 31 year old actress and mother of Honor and Haven admited. “It was sweaty, but worth it.”

Recent pictures of Jessica sporting a bikini shows that her sweaty tactic payed off as she displayed her lean killer abs.

A product that would probably have been a lot more comfortable for Jessica and achieved the same results is the Belly Bandit, as worn by Kourtney Kardashian following her pregnancies.

This product is also available in non-designer solid colors:

The Belly Bandit is an excellent product for shrinking your midsection while also appearing more trim and toned while worn under your clothes. It is adjustable and can be tightened as you get smaller and continue to lose weight.

Please note this product is not to be worn during pregnancy or immediately following a Cesarean. Please consult your doctor before wearing after pregnancy.

  • Kim Kardashian Wore Her “Maternity Clothes” The Best!

Ok, so we know Kim Kardashian has been getting a lot of flack for her maternity fashion choices. However, I must say, I am secretly becoming a bit of a fan. I am actually motivated to see what she wore to the latest event whether it be a striking off the runway black Prada dress to an intimate dinner date with Anna Wintour or her Riccardo Tisci designed floral print gown which she wore to the Givenchy Met Ball the following night (with built-in matching gloves).

Really, we do need some comic relief from Kate Middleton’s never misses and perfect pregnancy body perfection (although I am a huge fan of the Duchess and admire her picture perfect pregnancy and fashion choices). I am, however, more intrigued by Kardashian’s maternity fashion “hit” or supposed “misses” because, really, isn’t that what fashion is all about- not conforming, making a statement, showing your mood and style in the body you are currently living in?

I credit Kim Kardashian for making maternity fashion a lot more interesting, expressive, unexpected, sometimes humorous and controversial. I agree that pregnancy should be a time to embrace the bump however demurely or flamboyantly as we please. It’s a time to celebrate our bodies and the body forming in us. It is not a time to be ashamed of a few added pounds in places other than the bump, which for most of us is perfectly natural (unless you are the Duchess of Cambridge!)

With that said, I do have to laugh along with Robin William’s “who wore it best” taunt at Kim’s dress choice to the Met Gala and more of less accusation of her channeling his character as Mrs. Doubtfire in his 1990’s film. Kardashian’s dress is strangely reminiscent of that once upon a time comedy fashion display with the same busy head to toe floral pattern. However, without a doubt, Kim did wear it best, complete with the built-in flowered print gloves!

  • Vanity Fair Names Kate Middleton “Best Dressed Pregnant Lady”

Kate Middleton recently topped Vanity Fair’s Best-Dressed Pregnant Ladies list, which was not a big surprise considering her flawless and varied pregnancy fashion. This new list is part of Vanity Fair’s International Best-Dressed Challenge. Vanity Fair explains their choice of Middleton:

“At every life stage—courtship, marriage, and now pregnancy—her classic, insta-iconic pieces have inspired and influenced the wardrobes of sweethearts, brides, and mothers-to-be, respectively. The duchess conceals her (bare minimum of a) bump with three-quarter-length coats and short skirts that also help to draw attention to enviably still-svelte stems.”

Some pretty fancy wordage which we interpret as meaning she dresses well and looks good!

Although we loved Kate’s parade of stylish cross over buttoned coats and patterned tights, we look forward to her spring dress selections as her bump grows. I’m sure she will continue to deserve her top ranking for International Best Dressed Pregnant Ladies!

  • Halle Berry Stuns in Black Cut Out Maternity Gown!

Halle Berry does not seem like an expecting mom of “advanced maternal age” at 46 as she is looking positively glowing with her growing baby bump. She has been recently promoting her film in Brazil in a number of figure-hugging outfits which show off her growing bump. She and fiancé Olivier Martinez will welcome a child, rumored to be a boy, later this year.

Halle looked gorgeous at the South American premiere of her film in a black cut-out maternity gown with spider web lace accented on the sides. Her film, a thriller with Brad Anderson and Abigail Breslin recently hit theatres.

“I feel fantastic. This has been the biggest surprise of my life to tell you the truth,” Halle told CNN a few weeks ago.

“I thought I was kind of past the point where this could be a reality for me. So it’s been a big surprise and the most wonderful.”

Berry’s next project will be the much anticipated sequel of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

We look forward to seeing more of Halle’s gorgeous maternity style!

  • Kim Kardashian Admits The Celebrity Pregnancy Is Not always As Easy As It Looks!

Kim Kardashian made her pregnant mom fans feel a little better the other day by admitting on the Red Carpet of her new movie, Temptation, that’s she’s just as human as the rest of us with a bout of pregnancy fatigue to contend with:

“Being pregnant is not as easy as my sister made it look or as my mom has made it look. I like to be active ….but I’ve been chilling out. I took a week off, just to rest and it was amazing.”

We’re glad that Kim is taking care of herself first as we know she keeps a busy schedule. Pregnancy is a good time to slow down and listen to your body. If you feel tired and run down, take some extra rest. Overall you may need to adjust your routine for less stress and more R&R. You deserve it and it’s good for the baby!

  • Kate hoping for a Boy, William wants a Girl!

Despite what seemed to be a slip of the tongue a few weeks ago (implying a royal daughter was on the way), the Duchess of Cambridge said Sunday that she did not know the sex of her child and actually hopes it is a boy. She says her husband, Prince William, would prefer a girl. This revelation was made to a soldier during a St. Patick’s Day ceremony honoring the Irish Guards.

Kate is 5 months pregnant but claims she does not know the baby’s gender yet and it appears she will not find out until the birth of her child, just to keep everyone guessing! It was also revealed that the couple had not decided on names yet for their baby who will be third in line for the British throne.

Due to a change in policy for royal succession, Kate and William’s firstborn will succeed to the throne ahead of any future siblings, regardless of gender. In the past, the first male child was given precedence over birth order. These reforms were announced in October 2011 and agreed upon by the commonwealth nations. Finally gender equality in the modern monarchy!
